Porsche® IMS Bearing Inspection & Replacement
All model years 1997 through 2008 with the M96 or M97 engine for;
- Boxster®
- Cayman® and
- 911®
The IMS Bearing is similar to an axle bearing in that it is a sealed unit containing steel bearings and a permanent lubricant.
The seals and the lubricant inside the IMS Bearing are intended to last for the life of the engine but there is an issue in these models with the potential for deterioration.
Failure of this part can lead to extensive engine damage.

Pre-inspection procedure includes dropping the sump pan, inspecting the baffles, removing the oil filter and checking for metallic debris. Also includes a synthetic oil change and filter replacement. This procedure must be done to validate the manufacture's warranty on the bearing.
Warranty on the replaced bearings from Eurotech is 2 years/24000 miles, however, the manufacturer is stating the life to be at least 75,000 miles.
